Almost everyone who contacts me about a nude photoshoot for the first time feels a little nervous, even when it does not show in their message.
The questions tend to be similar. "I have never posed before. Is that a problem?" "What if I freeze in front of the camera?" "Do I have to be completely nude?" And, of course, "Will my photographs stay private?"
All of those questions are normal. A nude session is a personal experience, so you should know who you are working with, what will happen in the studio and what kind of result you can expect.
Here is how my nude photoshoots in Kyiv work, what they cost and what is genuinely worth preparing for.
How much does a nude photoshoot cost?
An individual session costs $100 per hour, with a two-hour minimum booking.
Two hours can sound like a long time. In practice, it passes quickly. We need time to meet, look around the studio, go over the plan, change outfits and set the light. Very few people feel completely at ease in front of a camera from the first minute.
I do not want to rush straight into the most revealing photographs. We usually begin with something simple, such as a shirt, jacket, bodysuit or lingerie. You gradually get used to the camera, see the first images and realise that nobody expects you to perform the impossible.
Studio rental, makeup, styling and special props are discussed separately. Before you book, we make a clear plan so that unexpected costs do not appear during or after the session.
What are you paying for?
A photographer's work does not begin when the shutter is pressed.
First, we discuss your idea. I look at your references, help define the style and choose a location. Some people know exactly what they want. Others can only say, "I want it to be beautiful, but not vulgar." That is enough to start.
Then I plan the light, outfits and sequence of the shoot. The session itself is followed by selection and editing.
You are not paying only for two hours in a studio. You are paying for the complete process and for a photographer who knows how to guide you, rather than leaving you in the middle of the room and saying, "Go on, pose."
Do I need to know how to pose?
No.
Most people in my portfolio are not professional models. They may have worried about their hands, felt awkward or believed that the camera did not like them.
I guide you towards the light, suggest where to look and explain what to do with your hands. Sometimes I ask you to move slowly rather than hold a complicated pose. Movement often looks more natural than trying to copy a frozen image.
You do not need to practise in front of a mirror. Save a few photographs you like if they help explain the mood, but we will not copy them detail by detail. A different person, body and light will always create a different photograph.
Do I have to be completely nude?
There is no such rule.
Nude photography can mean many things. It can show the whole body, or it can be a silhouette behind fabric, an open back, a detail or a shape created by light and shadow. Sometimes the most intimate photograph reveals very little.
We discuss your level of comfort before we begin. You can say what you do not want to show, and you can change your mind during the session.
If an idea makes you uncomfortable, we do not do it. There is no persuasion and no need to explain your no.
What happens during the session?
We begin by reviewing the idea and the outfits you have brought. I show you the studio and explain where I suggest starting.
The first photographs are usually simple. This gives you time to get used to the sound of the camera, the lighting and my directions. I can show you selected frames as we work so that you can see the result and know where the session is going.
We gradually change the clothes, light and mood. You do not have to remain serious or look into the lens all the time. It is fine to laugh, pause, ask for water or take a few minutes to rest.
A good nude session should not be a test of courage. It is collaborative work, and your experience while creating the photographs matters as much as the final images.
What should I bring?
Even for a fully nude session, I recommend bringing a few options:
- simple lingerie without large logos;
- a bodysuit or swimsuit;
- a white or black shirt;
- a jacket;
- stockings or tights;
- shoes or boots;
- jewellery you genuinely like;
- a robe or loose cover-up;
- water.
You do not need to buy a new wardrobe. A simple shirt or a piece of fabric can work better in a photograph than an elaborate lingerie set.
Arrive in loose clothing if possible. Tight jeans, socks and underwear can leave temporary marks on the skin.
Do I need to change my body first?
You do not need to lose weight, tan or wait until your body is somehow "good enough."
Most people have features they feel uncertain about. Tell me before the shoot and I will consider them when choosing the light, angles and poses. My aim, however, is not to redraw you during retouching.
Photography can show a body with care and beauty without turning a real person into a plastic version of themselves.
What happens to the photographs afterwards?
Booking a session does not automatically put your images on my website, Instagram or in an exhibition. Publication must be discussed separately.
If every photograph needs to remain private, say so before booking. If you are comfortable sharing only selected images, we can agree on that too.
You should always know where your photographs may appear, especially when the work involves nudity.
What if I am nervous?
You do not need to hide it.
You can simply say, "I am nervous and I do not know what this will feel like." That is useful information, not a problem.
We can begin more slowly, work in clothing for longer or take a break. There is no compulsory schedule that says you must undress ten minutes after arriving.
Trust does not appear on command. It needs time.
